What historical moment is this?

That sounds like the whaling ships that got caught in the Arctic ice on the north shore of Alaska, when the ice came in early. I think that was the early 1800's. They were eating food from tins, but canning was a new process back then, and the dangers of lead poisoning were not yet understood.
