I've had my first cold sore on the lip. Does that mean that I won't be able to kiss my child anymore?

I've read that herpes simplex 1 (the virus that causes cold sores) can be transmitted even when dormant. Does that mean I'll always be contagious? This is making me worry like crazy. Even my mom said that I should now bring my own utensils when I go have dinner at her place. Help! This is a serious question.
