Why do kids not take care of their possessions anymore?

In my class, I had a kid brag about how he left his DS in his pocket when he went swimming and his parents got him a new one. And one of my friends has almost every console and good game, but keeps them scattered around his room and even threw his pokewalker on the pavement just to see if it would break. Why are kids nowadays treating $200 electronics like disposable utensils? My DS broke twice, and I had to pay to get it fixed at nintendo's repair shop out of my own $. What gives?
