Why in a lot of shows on tv I see?

I guy in prison try to dig his self out with a spoon? Was there like some famous moment in history way way back in the day that a person dug himself out of prison, jail, or a dungeon with a spoon or some sort of utensil? If not then were the heck did that come from?
